I just finished Frontier Wolf.

Oh, wow.
Lucius's death was sad, but it didn't move me as much as I was moved when he offered Alexios his beloved Georgics to burn. I knew Lucius was going to die anyway because
sineala already told me that Alexios and Hilarion were the only named characters from the Third Ordo left standing at the end, but that's not what moved me about that scene. It was Lucius's devotion to the Wolves. The book was only going to get in the way of fighting.
I didn't get emotional over Alexios killing Cunorix. (That fight was really short, wasn't it? I expected it to go on for at least another four Kindle pages.) Maybe I'm shallow enough that if Cunorix had been better-looking and more charming, I'd have felt sadder about his death. I felt sad on Alexios' behalf, though.
I did get extremely emotional when Alexios, in sick bay, turned his ring over and over on his finger and said to his ancestors, "See, I made you proud!" Maybe because I'm in EOT9 fic headspace still. I could see Marcus smiling at him from somewhere in the great beyond.
Also, when Hilarion put his arm around Alexios and spoon-fed him broth... yeah. Oof. Right in what you kids call "the feels" nowadays. I'm sure people slash Alexios/Cunorix, and of course I can see why. That said: a dark, intense little fuckup who's redeemed himself like whoa, and a tall, lanky, freckle-faced blond with fanatic loyalty lurking behind an exterior of sarcasm, gallows humor, and I-don't-give-a-fuckness? Give me a spoon so I can eat that shit up.
